I am currently growing (farming) my illustration account. Here are some homegrown techniques to add variety to your account.

One of my illustrations

Viewers. Like. Variety

On this quest to grow my illustration account I took some time and evaluated other artists that I follow. I examined the different kinds of content they posted and began to organize different methods I wanted to use on my own account. Below I will list some of the different types of posts you can use to add variety and breadth to your account.

My give away post

1. The Give-Away

Who doesn’t like getting something for free? You have probably seen this before but what you do is offer a giveaway to your followers. For me, I decided to give away two prints to two people and in order to enter the giveaway, they need to share my post to their story and tag one friend in my post. This giveaway post got a ton of interaction and was super fun to do.

2. Asking Questions

Engaging your audience has never been easier with the different polls and questionnaires available on the Instagram story. Since I know my audience is into art I asked them who their favorite artist is and why and got a lot of great responses.

Showing the process

3. Showing The Process

Personally, I love to see when creators I follow show their creative process. It feels a little exclusive to get a behind the scenes view. For this post, I made sure to document each step of the process.

4. Talk Shop

People have asked me about what software I use or what pens I use and this is a great opportunity to do a shop post where you document what you use to create your art.

5. Show Yourself!

People often have an easier time connecting with a face than a faceless entity. Make sure to document yourself and who you are.

6. Timelapse That Work

Filming a timelapse is an engaging way to document your work. There is free software that lets you film time-lapses on your smartphone or while recording your computer screen. I was able to create a time-lapse of one of my drawings.

7. We’re Live!

Instagram Live is a relatively new feature that is super exciting. You are able to stream video over Instagram. You can buy cheap tripods online to hold your smartphone. This is a great way to engage with your audience, you can even chat with them while you work.

There are tons of ways to engage your followers. Make sure to be brave and be creative!
